Straight-Pull Hub Failures

Hub failures from http://www.rouesartisanales.com/article-290881.html (dated 2005/04/22) and http://www.rouesartisanales.com/32-categorie-100023.html (dated 2005/09/23) as of 2007/07/28.

Both are rear hubs using straight-pull spokes that enter raised "tabs" tangent to the hub shell. The Rigida apparently failed all three "ears" of the tab, whereas the Mavic apparently failed only the center "ear".

According to text accompanying the photos, the Rigida wheels had about 4000-5000km service. The rider discovered the rear rim was cracked and switched to a different wheel, then during the ride both front hub flanges failed; spokes pulled out on one side but remained attached on the other. Note corrosion on axle and QR, suggesting corrosion may have played a role.

A Mavic wheel failed similarly:

According to accompanying text, the wheel was a 2004 Mavic Ksyrium Elite 2004 with about 5000 km and less than one year use. The failure was noticed while riding at constant speed. It appears a single "ear" of the tab failed, with the outer ones intact. Note the background is the same, suggesting similar environmental exposure.
