Frame Failures

Two frame failures. One rider, but one bike bought used.

From http://ehud42.blogspot.com/2007/09/well-it-has-been-way-to-long-since-i.html as of 2008/04.

First failure at right dropout/chainstay joint. 8-year-old steel frame.

[X]

This type of failure sometimes occurs with freewheel hubs; standard freewheel hub axles break relatively often. Chain loads then bend the dropout. This wheel appears to use a cassette hub.

Second failure at junction of seat tube and bottom bracket/down tube. Aluminum Trek bicycle.

[X]

Failure noticed after hearing "creak" sound while riding, then after several weeks riding the noise disappeared and the bicycle felt wobbly.

This type of failure sometimes occurs when the "hidden" tube seam is not welded (all tubes welded at once, rather than welding one tube fully then assembling/installing the other tube). It is unclear how this frame was assembled or where in the seam the failure started.
