Matrix 559 MTB rim, eyelet failure:
Eyelet failure noticed during periodic truing, when the eyelet turned with the nipple. Eyelet may have been corroded. Wheel is built with aluminum nipples and was not lubricated before turning. (Note aluminum nipples are more prone than chromed brass nipples to pressure weld to neighboring parts, especially when unlubricated.)
Spoke type unknown; note that thick spokes have higher tension excursions, so tend to "work" the rim more.
Rider weight 95-100 kgf, ridden biweekly during summers 20-30 km offroad and fire roads. Bought used from Don Myrah Jr. in the mid 1990's, service history unknown but may have already been used vigorously.
Nipple was removed and eyelet inserted from inside.
