Cannondale Coda ``Magic'' crank, 172.5mm. (Sorry, no more detailed picture is available.)
Crank is made of two hollowed sections, glued together. This failure apparently due to glue separation. The same model of crank, made in a different date range, was recalled for a similar failure.
Accompanying text says
``u can see that the left crankarm split and disintegrated at BB end.'' and ``here is good arm #c9sr 6102 and the other is c9sr 6088. my friend said he for 3 rides he thought his cleat or his pedal was loose but never looked at cranks to check for damage it broke loose just as he got to house.''
Note the wavy taper to attach to the crank axle appears to be part of the inboard half of the crank. Had it been part of the outboard side, a failure like this might stay together better or fail with more warning.
